Kunjapuri Birds 25 Sep 2023

Whispers of the Foothills: A Morning on the Kunjapuri Birding Trail

As the early autumn mist clung softly to the Shivalik hills of Rishikesh on September 25, 2023, the Kunjapuri trail transformed into an open-air theater of vibrant colors, fluttering wings, and the rich symphony of the Garhwal Himalayas. Escaping the bustling energy of the holy city, the journey into the lush Narendra Nagar forest division offered an intimate look into a thriving, untouched paradise.

Stepping onto the natural dirt trails, the crisp, crisp morning air immediately revitalized the spirit. The forest here is dense and emerald-green, a rich canopy of oak and pine punctuated by wild Himalayan flora. Every step taken on this hilly terrain demanded presence, but the reward was instant—the air was thick with the earthy scent of the forest floor and the melodious, overlapping calls of resident and migratory birds.

Equipped with a pair of binoculars and a camera, a slow trek down the valley revealed the true gems of Kunjapuri:

  • Jewels of the Canopy: Looking up through the fractured sunlight filtering through the leaves, the traveler was greeted by flashes of electric blue. The Verditer Flycatcher, with its unmistakable copper-sulfate blue plumage, sat gracefully on an open branch, darting out occasionally to catch insects mid-air. Nearby, the brilliant Blue-capped Rock Thrush put on a spectacular display, its rich blue and chestnut colors contrasting beautifully against the deep green foliage.

  • The Comedic and the Striking: Moving deeper into the trail, a sudden rustling of leaves brought forward a flock of White-crested Laughingthrushes. These incredibly social and boisterous birds moved in a cheerful frenzy, their snow-white crests bobbing up and down as if sharing a collective secret. Just a few trees over, the elegant Red-billed Blue Magpie glided through the air, trailing its magnificent, long blue-and-white tail feathers behind it like a ribbon.

  • A Tapestry of Life: The sheer biodiversity along the trail was mesmerizing. Flocks of Himalayan Bulbuls with their distinct yellow vents and forward-curving crests hopped from branch to branch alongside delicate warblers and sunbirds. In the quieter, shaded corners of the trail, the distinct, metallic call of the Great Barbet echoed from the high canopy, while a Slaty-headed Parakeet flashed past.

As the trek wound down toward the lower valleys, glimpses of the sacred Ganges winding its way through the landscape below added a sense of grandeur to the intimate forest experience.

The Kunjapuri trail on this autumn morning proved that it is far more than just a path to a mountaintop or a temple viewpoint. For the traveler who stops to look and listen, it is a living, breathing sanctuary. To witness these winged wonders thriving in their natural habitat leaves an indelible mark on the soul—a gentle reminder of the pure, unfiltered magic that awaits when we choose to disconnect from the chaos of the world and step into nature’s embrace.
